1982 Aircooled - What is the second dial for?

Post by Brownbetty »

This may sound like a daft question but I have recentky bought a 1982 Aircooled. There is a dial on the instrument panel next to the speedo which doesn't work. It has calibration but no numbers, a face but no hands and appears to have been disconnected as there is a spare cable behind it which looks as though it was originally connected. I have no idea what it was used and until I do I can't start to get it working again. It has the fuel gauge at the bootom which is working just fine.
Bought our second t25 in June 2012 after 18 months without one. It's good to be home. I am now the proud owner of a mobile project. 1982 Danbury conversion Aircooled and all totally original. Got some work to do!!!

It's for nothing on mine. Just a blank face and fuel gauge. No clock, no rev counter nothing to see here....

I also have a 1982 Aircooled. The right-hand 'dial' on the instrument panel does not contain anything other than the fuel gauge.
Cheers, Neil

Same here - there's a lookey-likey backing to match with the speedo but nothing in it, just the fuel gauge at the bottom.

Ah, thats where you're all wrong. Lot of people assume theres nothing there but in actual fact (and a stroke of genius by VW), once you hit 95mph this dial transforms into a really fancy countdown sequence complete with inbuilt voice that gives you a 20 second warning the engine is about to blow. The sheer brilliance perhaps is that there is almost nothing to give away the secret dial - it all looks like a plain facia but hit that magic 95mph (and no towing or shoving in another engine as it can detect that) and all is revealed.

The downside is that you only get 20 seconds to nudge your passenger and say "Hey look at that....." :D

My speedo must be faulty or THE second dial isn't working properly. I hit 95 mph and got no warning of impending destruction!!!

Thanks for all the help.
