What type of thermo stat you got fitted? Wax type or bellows? I'm sure If they fail it's in the closed posistion.

have you changed the water pump belt.
the diesel engines have 2 different types of water pump .
they look the same but are designed to pump water when the pulley is spun different ways. if you have shortened the belt make sure its turning the same way it originally did!

these will happily bleed on flat ground , if not there is a fault with the system.

how long was it running for as they may take quite a while to warm up!

yes but which pump did you fit?
is it the correct one for the direction you need.
they look and fit exactly the same except the impeller is reversed!
so will only pump one way

I had this problem about a year ago when i got my van trailered to me. Turned out it just needed a proper bleed, i followed the brickyard how to and it was fine after that. Basically need some one to really rev the engine once its up to temp, if you then look at the coolant tank you should see the water level drop. Remove lid and top up with water, just keep on doing that until the rad gets hot. I was convinced my rad was blocked until i tried this
