How to remove a rusted out heat exchanger?

Post by Mickyfin »

My heater exchanger is rusted to hell, and I wish to remove it, but upon closer inspection, I can't figure out how I would get it off as there is the exhaust pipe going through the middle of it.

Is it a simple case of having to cut it off with metal snips? Obviously undo the two jubilee clips to the flexi's too and remove those.

Thanks

that's pretty much what you'd have to do, and block up the ends in the inlets where the preheater pipes go into the air box pipework to keep the water out

Ok, cheers for that mate. I would appreciate your input with my gearbox switch thread. My reversing lights don't work, and neither does my rear diff lock light. Check out my thread when you have time please as I have included photos of plug i found unplugged..

long leaded two pin plug will be the difflock one, the one to the reverse switch is only just long enough to reach the switch which is on the left side (when viewed from the rear - what we call the nearside as that's the kerb side in the UK) of the box forward of the driveshaft flange
As Jed has said bridge the two contacts in the plug and the appropriate light should light up with the ignition on, be aware all vans have the wiring for the decoupler even though they were never fitted so there's a spare trailing plug usually cable tied up against the main wiring loom in the nearside rear wheel arch close to the fuel sender and that can be mistaken for the reverse switch plug
I don't have Bentley wiring diagram to hand so can't give you the wiring colours for the respective switches but from memory the reverse switch is brown (ie earth - they all have that) and purple/thin black or blue, the one in the picture is I'm prety sure the rear difflock switch tell tell plug
if lights don't light then you have a wiring issue or failed bulb and you'll need to do some continuity testing to chase the fault
You really want the difflock lights to work as you don't want to drive on road with locks on

Thanks so much for that mate, it really helps. Yes, I do have the spare plug by the fuel sender. I will bridge this wire, and see if the diff lock lights up.

Need to figure out why my reversing lights have failed next. Fuse is ok, and were working prior to the theft of my Syncro. Will locate the reversing switch on the left side, and check it out in a similar fashoin to the diff lock connector :ok
