My enigne stalls when idleing
especially when i take along time to change gear, is that just the idle speed?
Sometimes it ide'les higher but most of the time its really quiet or stalls.

Sounds like you need to drop the air bypass control valve out and fettle or replace it. You should find it on the left hand sid of the inlet as you look at it, below the main intake hose. It regulates the idle.

A lump if black plastic with electrical and hose connections to it. It should be pretty obvious once you've taken off the intake hose.

NO!
That's the airflow meter. The thing I'm on about is under the black hose. Under the main black hose there are some other black hoses, some of these will connect into the bypass valve.

ok i've found it; er whats fettleing?
im a bit scared to take it off - will it break?
How can i order a new one? I dont have a chassis number or Reg; how do you normally order your parts diamond?
It doesnt ever stall when you start the engine and just let it sit, it idle's just fine. It's when you start driving and come to a halt then it stalls. But sometimes inbetween it will start to idle high and not stall then back to stalling again. It's dangerous because i loose my breaks!

Adjusting the throttle idle control, when it's (presumably not been changed) is not attacking the cause of the problem, but the effect. When you take off the intake hose you'll be able to see the condition of the throttle butterfly - if this is all gummed up then you might want to give it a good clean up with carb cleaner, but I'd be immediately suspicious of the idle control valve if nothing's changed on the engine.

i can see the throttle thingy without taking the hose off.
It has some gunk on it, i've tried prodding at it revving and seeing if it drops back into place ok, but like i say it never stalls unless your driving.
So is it a complete amatuers job to take off that black plastic thingy and err fettle (what is that?) it?

i installed the heater matrix bypass 'h' pipe myself. I just dont know what anything is called. Tell me in laymans terms an im away.
I just spoke to colin (starspider) he thinks it may be the brake servo return as there is no return valve, hence me loosing pressure and there being no brakes (solid) when the engine stalls...does anyone have one?

Fettling originally was a word used in foundries meaning cleaning up castings of their flues, burrs and flashings.
Its now used to mean cleaning, deburring, even lubing apparently - basically giving something some TLC, but with an understanding of what you are trying to achieve without wrecking it... so in modern parlance you migt even fettle your missus - though many might think you meant stroking her gently, in fact, removing her rough edges would be more in keeping with the original meaning of the word !

ahh thanks!
Fettleing doesnt sound like pillow talk to me
Diamond; why didnt you just say cleaning!!!
Ok so colin showed me what one looked like, i went down to the local commercial vw place and they sourced one (the last one in excistence i think!) £25 i cut most of it off apart from the valve and its ticking over niceley now no stalling; It even feels a bit faster...hmmm maybe im not loosing air pressure in the engine or something; god i know nothing.
