No third gear and forth pops out occasionally.

Big lumps of metals and spanners.

No third gear and forth pops out occasionally.

Post by Hendrixevo147 »

Could someone please tell me if you think my gearbox has gone, I've got a 1982 2L Air Cooled van, whilst driving to my mates house the other day I when to put the van into third as usual and it seemed to go in but when I released the clutch nothing happened, so I went straight to forth which was ok (does pop out of forth occasionally). I've not found third since. No crunching trying to get into third but
Seems weird that it feels like its gone into gear.
Could you tell me if you think this is obviously a gearbox job or
Could it e something else?
Also if it turns out to be a gearbox, where the hell do I find one from?
Cheers
Pete

either it's not going into gear or you have stripped the teeth off the gear - draining the oil will confirm the latter diagnosis
if it's not going into gear then check through the linkage thoroughly to rule that out and if that's all ok chances are it's the synchrohub that has broken so that the slider won't go into third - eventally it will jam in 4th and won't come out
usually plenty of DKs for sale but at the moment everything seems to get snapped up pretty quick as peeps can't wait for a rebuild in the summer so more likely to take a chance on a used box
