Mistery engine

Post by charlesgt »

Hi

We bought a 1984 T25 recently. It was advertised as having a 1.6TD engine from a 1991 vw golf. I took it down to the local mechanic and he disagrees with it being a golf engine. The sump for example seems to be what would have been designed for the van. He was wondering if it might be top end from a golf but an original bottom end. My main problem however is that I am having trouble with insuring the van as we need to identify the engine. We are using same insurer as the previous owner, but it turns out that they never disclosed this fact, so their insurance was invalid. Anyways could someone give me some tips on how I can identify the engine?

Cheers

Charles

post some pictures up, it may help us identify the engine.
If you have a new engine transplanted from another car you do have to use some of the parts off the original vw engine. One of them being the sump.

Insure it as a 1.6TD and stop panicing. They are the same engine. It does not matter what the engine was out of.

Charles,

Could very well be a golf etc type Td. As your mechanic should/will know - in the golf they sit upright'ish' and in the T3 they are canted over at 50' so there is no way the golf oil pump/sump would work (ok it would but your engine would die very quickly).

As previous, post a pic up.

On top of the injector pump, is there a round 'space ship/flying saucer type affair about 2" across and 1"+ tall?

Engine number is stamped on block. It is on a cast/machined flat surface immediately below the head/head gasket. Count 3 injectors from the rear bumper and it is in there 'somewhere' , under where waterpipe exits side of head, behind back of injector pump where hard lines exit. You get the idea! You will need a torch, some WD40 and a rag, keep rubbing/cleaning/looking/swearing - it is there somewhere.

Engine code quite possibly RA or SB.

IF it is a golf engine then the pumps are helluva lot better than a JX one - really woke my syncro JX up when i fitted just the pump. :ok

only real difference with a golf engine is it had hydraulic tapet adjustment and the pump was a better setup...same output and not a perfomance upgrade really...just a usability one. same basic engine block.

Hi all
Thanks a lot for the help. The engine does turn out to come from 1991 vw golf 1.6TD, block and head, but with the original sump. The conversion is a mess and the turbo is not looking to healthy. We are considering removing it, but I'd need a new manifolds and exhaust. This would also simplify things regarding insurance as the van was originally normally aspirated, and nothing (e.g. breaking) has been uprated with the conversion. So question is can I get the manifolds? would the ones form an original T25 1.6 diesel bolt on? I didn't think they did a 1.6 normal diesel for the golf, but frankly haven't a clue

Cheers

Charles

Oh I see there was a 1.6L diesel in golf, jetta guess that is normally aspirated
