TDI dipstick - again !

Post by syncroandy »

Sorry about this, I guess I wasn't paying attention properly last time.. IIRC peeps were saying they fitted a JX dipstick to a TDI OK, using an adapter made by cutting off the bottom of a TDI dipstick, and drilling it out to 8mm.

That's fine, but how have they got the dipstick to line up with the hatch on the back of the bus, with a normal TDI (1Z,AHU) alternator bracket ? I've got one here, and its very much in the way of the dipstick !

Andy
I used the lower section of the AFN dipstick guide drilled out to accept the standard JX guide tube. I then machined a ferule and soldered(silver) to the AFN section. This raised the dipstick level up about 20mm compared to original position which i adressed by making dipstick longer by rebending the 'loop end' with indicators at the tdi 4.5-5 litre level.
i used the standard water pump /alternator bracket and filed a channel so the dipstick tube lies between water pump bracket and body of alternator. This put the dipstick end convieniently in the middle of the rear flap although a little on the high side and a little too close to the locking mechanism(if you have one).
So far all has been good with no leakage at engine end and a relatively unfussy original-ish way of dipping the oil. I have seen this machined into the 1z unit-Tudor Morgans TDI Gypsy conversion shows the process but a bit of elbow grease with a round file produced the same result for me.

Sorted, did the alternator bracket hack as on Taylor Morgan's site. Die grinder was useful. Found the JX tube sat right down on the adapter made from TDI stub so only small level change on stick.

All I did was lengthen the tdi stick.
There is easy access to its position through the lid on which is not difficalt to lift up.
I never liked the old JX stick, and the pin point acuracey needed to return it.
The shorter straight stick is so much easier to locate without the need of two hands.
Holding down the flap and poking in the stick on every van I've owned was enough to warrant change for me.
I wonder if that's why the TDI one is so much bigger and easier to locate?

Thanks, this was in a camper which may be carrying camping gear etc. and tailgate has stuff bolted to it as well, so flap access was very much preferred.
