New carbs or rebuilds ? PDSIT 34`s Aircooled 2.0l Help

Post by steveflook »

Hi there, have an 81 2 litre Aircooled T25 with twin Solex PDSIT 34`s which appear to have failed all of a sudden. Have spoken to gasure ( doesnt do mail order anymore) and gower and lee (still waiting for a price). But am now wondering if its a better option to buy a new carb set up for him. Am hoping some of you have already been down this road and could advise us on what are the best options. Many thanks

Had a few problems with mine. Same set up as yours! I was advised that the solex were the best. I took mine to Steve at Gascure and it was the best thing that I did. He had it in for most of the day and now runns like a dream. He is in Chester if that helps. Over an hour and a half for me but worth it. He knows his stuff. Lods of camp sites in the area too if traveling a long way! :ok
If in doubt give it a clout!

Ta Trunkster for the reply, and Steve was my ideal choice but the van wont go 20 miles nevermind all the way to Chester lol. Would prefer to keep the Solex as other makes seem to be even more trouble from what Im reading. Yet another head scratching moment

Had the same problem with mine. I phoned a couple of companies ..but got fed up with being quoted 9 week lead times for the solex carbs to be refurbed.
I bit the bullet and purchased a single weber....I know people say they are not good for Aircooled engines...but wanted to try it for myself. At least now I can send away the solex carbs and not have to worry about the wait..

To be honest you hear good and bad reports about single and dual webers....one of those things..

Glenn.
Life is not a rehearsal...Live life to the max....Buy a Aircooled VW and get covered in Rust and Oil.......But we all love it really....!!

which appear to have failed all of a sudden

Did you try replacing the blanks that had "fallen out" in the photos in your other post?
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

Yes Boxy I did. The screws were in there but obviously had been removed and replaced. Ive sealed them up with some solid rubber tubing for now more to protect the threads as there was no air being sucked in through there. On closer inspection I noticed petrol leaking from both throttle spindles which are obviously worn. This may be part or all of the problem, just seems strange they both failed at the same time ?? Bit stuck now as Gasure wont do mail order and Gower and Lee have a 7-9 weeek waiting list argh. Have heard Roger Balls name pop up for re-bushing, so may go to him then rebuild the carbs meself. Even so its not he right time of the year to be off the road hence my question as to whether to buy some replacements even if they are a stop gap to getting the Solexes re-furbed.
Then to cap off a great week had a stone crack me car windscreen too grrr
BTW Im in South Wales BillyBigSpud
