T25 Carb problem ( is something missing ?)

Post by steveflook »

Hi there first post and need help already lol. My girlfriend has a T25 2litre air cooled, 1981 with CU engine with twin solex carbs. Just had it serviced and ran fine for 200 miles on first trip. Last weekend after 30 miles, engine started running rough and wouldnt idle. Cut out every time we stopped. Had a look and checked as much as I know and couldnt find too much wrong. However on close inspection there appears to be 2 screws missing from the carbs, 1 on each. On the attached photos you can see how clean the threads look compared to the rest of the carbs. Am a bit concerned as on one diagram I looked at it said " never touch these " lol. I must stress that I havent examined them properly to see if there are screws right inside there but it does look like theyve been removed recently. Cant believe that they both fell out at the same time but does look dodgy on photos.
Just wondering if any of you have any ideas about this ? Hope someone can shed some light on this. Many thanks

I am in work so I can't check my van and the page from the Haynes doesn't show it clearly at all.

I had a " blanking"screw missing from my carb when I first got it and found it on top of the tinware but I think it was around 90' from where yours is?. It's definately not anything you adjust on these carbs. Try starting the engine with a finger over each hole and see if it idles.

Your symptoms sound like the rubber tee or elbow on the balance pipe that runs across the bulkhead have popped off or split.

What the hell is that cable in front of the carbs?

Thanks for the reply Boxy, I`ll have a look tomorrow when i get time.
The cable is a repair to the accelerator cable which was already on there when she bought it. Looks like a piece of brake cable off a push bike lol

I did a bit of google searching and there should be a screw in your carbs.

Have a closer look and see if the threaded hole opens into the venturi. If it does I wouldn't risk driving the van. One outcome could be a weak mixture & a dead engine, another would be an engine fire if the carb spits fuel out the hole.
