The service kit is basically a big bag of bits, a bit like flat pack some you need some you don't. Included in the kit though should be jets gaskets and diaphrams (leave it
) this should be enough to sort out a dodgy carb. I serviced mine myself and used some smelly celly (cellulose thiners) to clean the stubborn gunk. Both the wiki and Haynes manual have diagrams, you can source the kit from Gower and Lee (they have a website and hopefully someone will post with the fancy "look here" link for you).

It's nothing a great deal of time and money can't fix

Yes but remember a garage charges XX per hour, it aint in there interest to mess about with an old carb to get it werkin, they just bolt a new one on.. easier and less hassle from the customer than giving a whopping bill for labour...
Think GSF do the carb repair kits too, or have a word with Si at brickwerks, he was doing some rebuilt carbs IIRC...

I got quite a grotty looking Peirburg secondhand (didn't have one to start with) and spent about 6 hours cleaning and rebuilding it - now very pukka, didn't replace jets but did do accelerator pump and part load enrichment valve. make sure you find every hole in the carb body and clean it, on my second go I found one that took vacuum to diapraghm for second throttle, since cleaning that the van is much quicker
