heat exchanger T25 water cooled

On my newly acquired T25 DG engine there appears to be a box around one of the exaust manifolds which appears to be a heat exchanger that goes to the carb inlet, according to the haynes manual there is a device for regulating warm or cold air to assist with starting ? the box is shot, rusted out, how important is this to cold starting or engine efficiency ? it clearly has been missed for many years by previous mechanics who have worked on the van and the engine runs and starts fine so worth replaceing ?

The heater exchangers are not really a vital part of the exhaust system. If you check out the Brickwerks stainless system info, Mr Baxter mentions that their SS system has no provision for the heater exchangers, and comments on the DG engines working fine without.

Im in a similar situation though, and have been looking around in replacing mine as im OCD about OE parts

People living in extream climates like Finland would do well to retain the air inlet heater.. as it helps prevent carb icing.

but for our climate, as said..it's pointless

Very good point there Kev. Will try to save them, but will be on the look out for NOS replacements, but I feal they are like hens teeth.

That's probably more of an argument for keeping the heaterbox for the UK, rather than Finland - over there, it'll be so cold that icing's very unlikely - whereas in the UK, it's not uncommon because of high humidity around single-digit temps.

The mean annual temperature is about 5.5°C in southwestern Finland, decreasing towards the northeast. The 0°C mean limit runs slightly to the south of the Arctic Circle. Due to the warming influence of the Arctic Ocean, the coldest spot in Finland in terms of average annual temperature is not in the far north of Lapland, but in the northwest corner of Finland.

In finland relative humidity reaches its mean high in November and December (90%) and its mean low in May and June (65% to 70%). The figure does not vary very much within any region in any season.

in other words they have a colder climate with humidity, which is ideal for carb icing ... The climate of UK in general is humid, but this usually indicates 'heat' as well so icing would be less likely

so if they are needed for colder climates only i best get mine fixed as soon as possible as i live in manchester!
