Solar panels for charging fridge??

Post by D&DCAMPA »

We are going away for a week and dont have hookup, our fridge doesnt run on gas so does anyone know if the solar panels you can get are good enough to keep the leisure battery topped up of we are running the fridge off that? and if so is there a particular AH/Watt I need to buy?
Thanks

A fridge will flatten a 12v battery in a few hours. You'd need a big panel to keep the battery topped-up. My fridge has a 85W heating element (RM122) So 85w divided by 12V gives 7 amps at full power. If you've got a 65Ah battery it'll probably only keep the fridge going efficiently for 6 or 7 hours at best. You could use a 85w panel to power the fridge directly Maplins sell one for about £300. But obviously it'll only power the fridge in daylight, you still need a battery at night.

Personally I'd go with powdered milk and leave the beer in a near-by stream :D

Unless of course you have a modern compressor fridge which uses much less power...1.4 - 1.7amps and then running it on solar panels is a realistic option....very spensive tho.
