I thought I was on you foe list? Or are you going to send me flowers on my birthday now
It also needs a front screen and the body is on a pretty poor state after all those years outside. But you probably already knew that too...
I'm going for a spot of "white sticker" and M-code spotting tomorrow morning
PS I hear the owner was particularly unimpressed by the last offer of £500 to take it away, that's why they've decided to see about sorting it out at long last.

Re: The worst kept secret in Surrey...
Most illuminating! It's not every day that you see a bona-fide E-reg (1987) rhd 16" syncro up close
For the record, I have been told (by the man who really knows) that is the original MAN demonstrator/prototype that got ragged around Chobham Proving ground against various Unimogs "back in the day"...
The body repairs are going to eat money and the DJ has BOD issues so it's going to cost someone dearly for the privilege, whoever takes it on. It could be in worse condition, all things considered, but it's the typical doka corrosion catalogue: sills at the back end, deck/locker door frames, rear quarters plus a stoved-in passenger door for starters.

We need pics !
Is it still all there ?
Some pickup panels still available from Classic but those that are seem $$. Ask 'max and caddy' as he's done loads of welding on his single-cab. He's spent about a year on it

Re: The worst kept secret in Surrey...
Considering it's place in syncro history as the UK's "ur-16" it's value is down to whatever anyone will realistically offer, given that the current owners don't seem to appreciate or realize what it would be worth to a syncro enthusiast. Following on from repair estimates by the garage concerned, they may decide to continue or they may concede that it's not worth the effort for what they perceive as just a rusty old VW 4x4 pickup with sentimental family attachments.
In the latter case, there may be an opportunity for someone to make an approach if they are prepared to make a respectable offer, but I'm not getting involved in the process and wouldn't wish to be either!
I can't provide pics, that would be far too indiscreet as I've said enough and wouldn't dream of asking. Suffice to say that it's been moved to a garage who are quite familiar with rear-engined VW's and that includes syncros. It's details have been noted for the record but they will only go onto our database for the record and will not be for public circulation.
This wagon does have a reputation for raising the blood pressure and creating a lot of excitement; I'm just pleased that it looks like it has a chance of surviving instead of falling apart in a field where it has lain for the last 5-odd years.
P.S. The dropsides are present and look to be in fair condition iirc (I was wrong about the aerial pic on that one but it does have a rotten ply engine cover) and if it wasn't for the sill skins having let go above the jacking points, you've probably seen worse on the road! It's Marsala red and has a front winch btw...
