vanagon 2.0L fuel injection starting problems

Its my 1st year with this USA westie and its developing starting problems, starts cold 1st time although doesnt idle well until hot. if engine stalls in 1st 2-5 mins it becomes a nightmare to start taking 15 mins of turning over. Is it my technique or the automated choke? Once 15 mins in and warm all is ok.
found some notes saying NEVER pump the gas either hot or cold - all advice appreciated.
ps what sort of fuel consumption should i expect laden - 2.1l fuel injected westie 1983. at present its 20 mpg

mpg sounds about right im getting 25ish from a 2.1 dj. i would start by cleaning all the electrical connectors with a toothbrush and contact cleaner check the earth straps condition
