timing related or crappy injector?

Post by Iceworx »

I've filmed a quick bit of footage of my van trying to idle..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGaiebGPwpQ

What could this be? Timing maybe, or a crappy/duff injector?

The engine was stood for a few years before I fitted it, new belts, water pump, oil pump, new glow plusg, and its recently had a new diesel pump too.

Im just trying to narrow down whats causing the issue to prevent spending on something that wont fix the problem.

Thanks

Chris

I've always tackled problems that have more than one probability like Sherlock does.
a process of elimination, however odd the answer is.
start with the checkables then move on to the replacables.

spark delivery first
fuel delivery next

The clues are there Sherlock:
glow plugs
diesel pump

I wouldn't be checking for a spark. :rofl

Wowzer that is not a happy beast!!

your on the right track.

If i was taking a stab from that video, id say timing - does it drive ok or is it lacking a lot of power???

recheck all your timing marks - even one tooth out on the belt will make it run rough as a badgers nether regions.

but look through the yellow pages for somone who can check the injectors - there is a great guy down here who charges not much at all and will crack test and then spray pattern check them.

Thanks Kev, its startling how obvious something can be to a fresh pair of eyes after hours of pouring over the same problem.

Timing check first it is then :)

Thanks Tommo.

When its missing at idle is struggles to rev up slightly, but after that seems fine :)

I'll get the timing double checked :)

OK but have you driven it - say up a small hill.

Timing will usually manifest itself in a wild lakc of power and a lot of smoke ( which you seem to be getting) an injector will smoke alot but the power loss will be less pronounced.

Mind you if it was a 1.6d before you might not notice a difference :D
