I ruined a perfectly working van.

Post by pmoc_2001 »

Hi,

I tried to fit a 2nd hand toad alarm and got it all working with central locking or so I thought...

I had installed the ignition live and live while cranking wire to the red with black stripe wire from the ignition barrel. For the ignition live wire I used the black with yellow stripe. I cut them and patched in what I thought where the correct toad wires.

Trouble is when I came to start the van it started but was really noisy like cant talk near the engine noisy with the engine cover on. I disconnected the the alarm from the cables mentioned above and the van ran better.

Then it did not start at all and I sucked fuel through the fuel hose. It started after a 6-7 tries i've also noticed air in the hose from time to time.

Now though it only starts intermittently. I usually hear a grinding sound. I think its the starter not engaging properly. Could there be a voltage drop from the cut in the wires. I have reconnected the wire red with black stripe to the started solenoid.

Is this wire 1.5mm? as perhaps I should replace it to the fuse box

This is driving me mad, any help appreciated - thank you very much!

Got the thing to start more reliably (still not like before as it takes a couple of cranks). Still not hooked up the alarm again yet though.

I'm going to check the glow plug circuit next. What is the best connector to avoid voltage drop bullet or spade?

Ideally make a soldered connection , but if you must, bullets over spades !
