Westy California split charging

Hi guys there is no charging unit under my rear seat did they hide them anywhere else! The leisure battery doesn't seem to be charging with the van on 240 the socket works so there is elec to van not sure if fridge is working on 240 and taps getting slower. Does fridge run off 240 direct and tap just runs off 12v! Cheers

Typically the Westy has a small silver relay with fuse (integral or separate) under the drivers seat.



And it works similar to this:



Check on the B pillar behind the drivers seat for a small black fusebox. In there you should find 2 continental fuses.

Ayup mate..hows things ^^^ I'm pretty sure the silver relay isn't original, Westfalia fitted a 5 pin (double make) relay as standard...it's not unusual to see something different being used as the proper relays are difficult to source (almost all 5 pin relays are changeover type which is incorrect) correct is single contact double make. That relay is the incorrect type....sorry mate but this is a common mistake that users make when replacing this particular part.

I could only find a 30amp version with a quick search but this is the correct type:

I used an R100R on here. Then I put ring terminals on both the fridge an the battery wires and attached them to the Same pole (6mm) stud contacts.

Or perhaps a dedicated Lucas relay purpose made for split charging with a fridge...never used one but looks just the job.

No there is some craziness with the earth to the switching side of the relay I am getting a diagram together....

Errrrr? craziness? that's right surely....earth one side (often just a looped wire with eyelet onto the relay bracket self tapping screw or in the case of a Westy, a short cable across onto the battery earth terminal) and the other side: feed from the no charge light circuit.

Just to answer the op post the fridge should run on 12v if the engines running and you have the fridge set to the 12v option. set it to 240 volt and if the vans plugged in to 240v it should run on that. get your self a multimeter so you can check out the state of charge of your leisure battery.

It just has an Ignition feed and earth's through the starter solenoid so it's not energised when cranking.

I C ...otherwise the starter might try to draw considerable amps back through the relay from the leisure battery.
