Eberspacher and asbestos

Post by Shaundon »

In trying to get the eberspacher on my 84 westy to work i dismantled it to find a white asbestos like material between the case and the heat exchanger. It s crumbling away and im wondering if this is dangerous?

Anyone know if these heaters were originally made with asbestos?

Even if it is asbestos it would only be dangerous if you breathe it in. Wet it and the fibres will not be free to float in the air then you can safely bag it in a plastic bag.
As far as I know (not far :) ) the only asbestos that would be used is the sealing rings/gaskets on the heat exchanger. That is not to say that someone else has not made their own additions to an installation.

What model are you talking about?

Its the B2L petrol model that came with the club jokers back in 1984.

Where is this substance - round the fan/motor inlet piece or elsewhere? Take a look HERE - do you mean the feltlike piece around the motor?

No , it was a largeish white pad about 150mm by 50mm placed directly on the heat exchange fins of the large metal main body. Placed between it and the outer case (lower half) i assume to stop it vibrating or something.

Was starting to disintegrate and go powdery.

Would post a pic but ive removed it now.

I would get rid of it also - you don't want to be blowing an unknown dust into your van.
If you want to use something in place of it if you feel there is a chance of rattling I would suggest something like those silicon baking sheets - usually found in the pound shops for ... a pound. :D They have loads of uses such as for gaskets.

Thats a great idea. Thanks Oldiebut Goodie.

While on the subject of eberspachers, do you know if the pump continuously pumps fuel into the combustion chamber when operating or is it controlled to push a small amount in prior to each spark.?

Also the spark plug seems to have a heated coil round it, is this nescesary on a petrol model?
I ask because i think its gone on mine.

The pump pulses the fuel in.
The plug should have the heating coil intact for the petrol model.

So if i connect 12v across my pump terminals should i be able to hear /feel it pump, or does it require a pulse wave to get it to work. Trying to tell if i need to replace the pump.

Pretty sure the fans gone as 12v to it does nothing.

One click per touch of 12v - disconnect it from the heater first.

Cool , i think the pumps ok then. Having trouble getting the fan housing off as two of the screws seem to have seized on. :(

Do u think it would work at all without the spark plug heater coil? Even just so ican test the rest works before splashing out on a new one. Perhaps if i warmed the unit up first with fan heater blowing through it?

Where are you stuck then. Got mine down to the bare bones as the fan bearings were screwed.

I doubt that there would be enough heat to obviate the need for the heating coil.
Stubborn screws get a go with an impact driver before the heads get chewed.
