Leak from petrol tank when full

Post by Davidkirk »

Hello.
Over the years I have replaced every rubber pipe on the van as they have all perished over time. Now when I fill the tank (once in a blue moon when I am feelin flush) petrol pours from the tank area. I am hoping it's the pipes by the tank. It's a 1983 water cooled 1.9. I was wondering how difficult it is to remove the tank and replace the pipes. Or is it a garage job. I'm fairly handy but don't want to start and not be able to finish.
Cheers. Dave

Hi David

I think you that the fuel balance pipe that crosses the top of the tank is damaged, usually one of the plastic ends goes brittle and breaks, if you follow the breathers in from the expansion vapour tanks under the arches you'll probably be able to locate the issue.

http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=114" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Unfortunately the pipe is held in the center by a bolt only accessible with the tank out.

Drain, Remove fuel pipes, filler pipes, disconnect breathers, undo straps and gently drop down.
Easier with 2 people if you are working in the floor.

Regards
Pudding.

Get yourself a set of new grommets and seals, because they perish/harden and leak also.

I had to replace my fuel tank last year, it's easy enough to do, easier if front is jack up to give you the height to move. My advise would be be sure you replace every pipe and connector you can that could be suspect while tank is out. Also, in the recess on the middle of the tank it gather a lot of crap off road and overtime causes the tank to rot, put some hammer rite or similar over it while its out to save you trouble in the future. When putting tank back in I used a light smear of grease ( not too much that it drops into your tank) around the filler neck and grommets and it will make it easier to put back in. Good luck.
