Another Syncro Gearbox question

Post by irish.david »

Hi,

I've in the process of installing a Subaru engine into my van (86 Westy Syncro) and have the Trans-axle out. When i removed the magnetic oil drain plug i found what looks to be some sort of broken retaining clip stuck to it. I've attached a picture of the offending item below:

The gearbox is a standard 4 speed with crawler gear and has a diff lock fitted. Whatever it is seems to have broken off something as one is is a little serrated and uneven and looks like it's snapped. The van hasn't been driven for over a year now and i don't remember any problems with the gear box prior to that but i did notice that when the gear changed is worked by hand on the actual gearbox there is a real reluctance to change out of 3rd.

Anyone have any idea of how worried i should be?

Cheers

Dave

I'm within hours of finishing pulling my Syncro gearbox, so understand I've not yet seen the inside. However, I have been living and breathing the Bentley and that looks like the shift rod bushing/bearings that hold and guide the shift rod. They hold it stable and allow it to slide in a straight line back and forth inside the gearbox. I think there are several on each end of the rod, which is actually a rectangular cross section. I guess if I were you I'd want to know from others if these commonly break when the gear box is serviced and if they can get left in there by accident, or if this is a sign of wear or something else. In other words, is it possible that someone sloppily left this in there while installing new ones, or wishful thinking?

they break fairly often, that much can be broken and still works effectively, if you find ball bearings then it's broken up further and is no longer supporting the selector fork properly, unfortunately it's pretty much full strip down to change one

Thanks very much for the quick replies.

I think the best option is going to be get everything up and running and budget for a gearbox rebuild as funds allow. The gearbox isn't too bad to remove so it's not something that i'd dread doing.

Thanks again for the info.

One of these balls broke many teeth gears in my Syncro gearbox... Would be nice if you get the gbox to pieces and check!

Steel balls are not good when they dance inside of a gbox... this one is reverse gear...

In a pre-war car gearbox, you'd call that "serviceable"

Can get new, I prefer preloved ones as the tooling that made them is worn and tired and they aren't as tight on the shafts I find
