Melting wires 1.9 DG

I have fitted a new engine (from the breakers). I have had it running, and when sorting out leaks in the coolant pipes some of the wires started melting. I think maybe I had connected a positive wire to an earth on the outside of the distributor by mistake. Can anyone clarify where the wires should go? I have attached some photos to illustrate the situation.
