Glow plugs? Diesel not firing

Post by Joju »

The army bus turns over but will not fire. I guess I am looking at glow plugs.

I am stuck at the first step here ... I cannot find the glow plug fuse and relay to check. I have a big fuse-type box on the back left of the engine bay but it only has a single component there and I do not know what it is.

any help please? My wife really needs this to start tomorrow afternoon.

Is there anyone I can call for help in the surbiton KT6 area? I have seen tony hines on the forum, he is fairly close.

Samaritans feel free to call me on 07776137171

That is where the fuse is, have you tried to see if power is getting to the bus bar?

I got no test gear. How would you test this, with a volt meter?

I tried jumping the battery straight to the bus, but nothing happened.

Put a light from the bar to earth or turn the ignition on with the interior light on and see if it gets a bit brighter when the glow plug light goes out?

Id look at the fuseable strip on the bottom of the relasy , dont ppoke it too hard but if its corroded away then = no glow plugs, as a get you going bridge the 2 terminals and see if it then works and van starts.

The problem is, I cannot identify the fuse. There is an inch of red-sheathed cable screwed between two brass phillips-head set screws, under the relay. Is this it? I am going to post a pic if I can.

Ok, I see the box, the relay inside ... the fuse cannot be that big wire in front, can it?

Ah  so it has got a bridge, that looks a very permanent temp repair. so the fuseble link has broike or blown and this fitted, so either something caused it to blow or it failed with age,or damaged by numty hands, if the latter fair enough but if it blew then a short occured and if it recurs and you dont have the fuseable link then cables can gert hot things can fry and burn .......so back to the previous advice ref checking it through

There should be a 50Amp one of these between those two screws - I can't tell if it's just a wire link that has been put there or something else.

the last few times the bus did eventually start, but not any more and I cannot feel any heat near the plugs when the glowplug light is on.

if this means cables burnt out somewhere, then we will need professional assistance ...

thanks everyone for you contributions

Glow plugs? Diesel not firing

It could mean your glow plugs are knackered.

You have to take them out to test.
