What gear box?
Hi guys. I gues there are many types or gear box's! I need to change mine so I need to get the right one so which one do i need? It is a 2l air cooled 1981 with 4 gears! Are there different ones that will fit so that I have a choice if so which is best? Can I have a 5 speed or is that out of the question? I just want to pick one up and take it to a machanic mate and get it fitted so is there any thing else I need to look for or get apart from gear oil? Never looked into it before.
Thanx Guys

Re: What gear box?
only 2 choices will fit straight in
1.6 or 2.0 Aircooled petrol.
1.6 will give you 50mhp flat out
2.0 box ( DK code) which you shou;ld have and need to check(they come standard but can be changed over the years)
the 2.0 DK box is one of the best ratio boxes you can get , the other is the 5 speed AAP 2.1 petrol box , but the overall ratios are the same , but you CANNOT fit a 5 speed to an Aircooled
unless you have a box specially built you have the best ratios for crusing speeds you can get , so unless your box is faulty there is no point changing . if it is faulty you must make sure you replace it with a DK , 2.0 box NOT a 1.6 box!
if you think its low geared then perhaps you have the incorrect tyres on the rear?

Re: What gear box?
Thanx for that. I have problems when hot finding first and reverse. Ok on a long run but around town it is becoming a bit of a problem so need to change it. I have looked at it and it says WWOk53 091301178A on it. The only markings I can find. There is one on e bay but the last few numbers are different and it has 6 ribs which is more than i have any idea what all that meens? Are all DK's the same or are there variants?

Re: What gear box?
all dk's are the same , deep ribs , the 1.6 has shallow ribs so easy to tell.
your looking at the casting numbers .
sometimes badly corroded but the code is located elsewhere
sometimes using the search facility or looking in the wiki , above can supply the answer!
