Looking For A 16" Front Driveshaft

Post by GoldSyncro »

Does anyone have a 16" front drive shaft they would be willing to sell?

Cheers

Do you want a 28 mm shaft for locking front diff or your van may be set up with 14 / 16 non lock shafts. If the locker was added post factory it may have a front lock but still be set up on original 14"/16 non lock shafts.

Anyway if it's a 28mm locking shaft your after i have been trying to track one down for ages. Might have found a new source - waiting to here this weekend. Mostly the advice I have had from across Europe has been the same - do yourself a favour and swap to the thinner shafts. I've not taken that option as yet :D I live in hope that the 16" Syncro gods will smile favourably on me. Or that Irish Paul will heed his own advice to me and swap all the 16" parts off his new passion wagon as they are a pain the rear end to replace. Come on Paul do us a favour.

My 16" van has a front locker so I'm looking for the larger shaft to replace a smaller 14" shaft which has been used on one side. The other side is fine.

Burley do a replacement kit but won't supply only one side. At 1,385 Bucks excluding delivery it's also very expensive. Maybe we could share a kit or we could try and push him to supply the shafts only??

Burley does the shafts as a pair without the joints for $395

I never knew Burley did them at all, bodes well for the future.
might want to double check whether normal front inners fit, and also is it for locking front outer 16's

Interesting 8) 8) would need to de a direct replacement ie the big dog CV's on the outer? more research required methinks

I like the sound of Lee's option sort of 'in house' and repeatable. Any idea of cost Lee? Maybe we could batch say 10?

I have a stock of used outers which I am sure will be hit and miss buy neverthe less i am to give them a go., however if you need to build a bare shaft from scratch that could be a bit painful. Whats new :D

Received this reply from Burley last night;

'The 16'' cv's I am selling in my kit are the following VW part # 251 498 099C. My source for these tells me that there are aperantly 3 or more different part #'s and there is a difference in the outer diameter in some of these. I am told they are all the larger 16'' cv, just a very small difference in the diameter and the cv boot groove shape. Mine are the larger for sure as we over here have the 14'' spindle uprights, the length between the axle center and the lower ball joint is shorter by a few mm on a 14'' upright. Please do some checking on your end with the part # I have given you and please share with me what you find as I am always interested in knowing what VW has done especially in there vehiculs that were delivered in different regions of the globe, not to mension adding to my data base the different part #'s'

isnt it just the shaft thats needed? As for the cvj, i looked on vagcat and that part number is correct for a 16" front locker (although it does have a X at the end, maybe because it comes with the boot?)

i thought lee could get some made up though?

its mighty long but goes into 16" front shafts and possible replacements. page four halfway down, Audi 100/200 even gives you some part numbers

X means it's an exchange part, ie when you used to buy them off VW you had to give them the old one back, it's more about preventing people assembling a vehicle from parts than actually recycling them but GKN Spidan do do refurbished CV joints, I think they are remachined if in spec and fitted with maybe slightly oversize balls, I have a complete refurbished rear shaft here that belongs to SyncroAndy and the cv's are well tight even after 200 miles - reminds me Andy you should have taken it away when you picked up your gearbox, I'll add it to the load going to Shipston if you are going
the 108mm rear cvs are audi parts 431 498 103 CX just over a ton each from VW exchange - note the 108mm cvs have slightly less articulation than the 98mm ones but are stronger, 16" vans have less axle articulation than 14" - generally I see more wear on the 16" gearbox output flanges both on the splines and the matching diff splines and diff and on the oil seal face indicating that the less articulate joint passes on more axial load to other parts
108mm flanges for our box are over £250 each new, I have a couple of pairs in stock used, one set with good seal faces from a 2wd SA van and one set needing speedisleeving from a 16" syncro
All SA vans were fitted with 108mm flanges afaik, 2wd and syncro

custom shafts approx £100 each. they are tubular and very strong which as Al can confirm may not be such a good idea ??????
