The oil strainer was very clean, but there was a bit of bright green rubber and looked like a bit of gasket.

Thats how hot the cylinder is!! Pulled dipstick and oil was cold. and mean no heat at all

Sorry to read about your long and frustrating fight with your engine!

One of your posts suggests that there was a bit of gasket/green rubber in the oil. This, and the fact that the oil is cold when the cylinder is too hot to touch suggests that you may have bits of gasket/sealant blocking an oilway. This would have the twin effect of messing with your oil pressure, and causing the oil to overheat (eventually) and thin....

When my old 1200 Aircooled had new heads on the 'mechanic' had used a lot of sealer to ensure a leak free engine, most of which had ended up in my oil ways/cooler.

Not sure of the best way to sort this (or check for it) bar a strip down.

If you do end up with a recon engine in, get them to check that all your parts are presnt and correct so that if it is a bit of missing tinware etc your lovely new engine doesn't do the same....

I have to say that I have allways thought that its an oil flow issue, either from the oil pump (unlikley), or a blocked oilway. i havent gotten round to flushing it yet and might do as a last resort.

If the engine needs striping and rebuilding then who knows what it would cost - 7-800 quid + any damage to main bearings, valves, rods.

Recon engine, at least ill get a guarentee

Just had a look at the valve clearances and the righthand of engine had no clearance and lefthand side had 5mm

I have sorted those (i think), it sounds less like a machine gun now, but only after 15 mins idle i couldnt touch the clylider head tinware inside the engine bay. Bloody hot

Also I found an a little piece of green rubber (gasket) in the rocker cover. This was the same as the peice I have found in the oil strainer. Looks like it would have a radius of around 20mm



Very sooty plugs on two cylinders as well. Might just be start stop I have been doing

Only green ones I remember from the kits were oil cooler seals. Maybe thats it - blocked oil cooler.

Oil cooler seals are orange and black

I have replaced those and filled the oil cooler with petrol over night. Seemed to be OK when I blew down one of the holes

My way of pressure testing

Where ever its from it looks like its floating around in the oil system. Not sure how it would get in the rocker cover

Green seal could wel be a push rod seal, I think the seals on the engine I have puleed apart had green seals on one end.

That makes sense as there would be no way an oil cooler seal could get in to the rocker cover

Yup, pushrod tube seals are most likely - see top left of the photo here (marked H) -



Also, just inboard of the inner end of the pushrod tubes, in the lifter bore between the pushrod tube seat and the outer end of the lifter, there is a slot in the engine casing where oil drains back into the sump. Would be easy for a disintegrated tube seal to get into the sump that way.
