If i were you Paul i would do what i did when i bought my doka (not a 16'' though). This is the van,

Image

Having got a 2wd camper i came to realise enthusiasts spend money on there vans, so when i wanted the syncro buying one off an enthusiast seemed to make sense rather than buy a dog and throw unknown amounts at it and there would always be lots of other people who would know and have seen the van in action. I just put a wanted add on all the vw forums saying what i wanted ideally and the sellers contacted me. The best ones i was offered were ones that wernt openly for sale yet and in the end chose the one that was perfect for me, tons of extras heated seats, power steering, engine pre heater, light washers, captains seats, opening rear windows etc etc even the right colour :D

I have just been putting all the paperwork in a new folder today (like a right saddo) and have been looking through the receipts, all work was done by Baxter so again this was a big selling point and peace of mind when buying.

I bought the van for £5000 in i think March 2008
It was bought by the previous owner for £3700 in September 2005 two and a half years earlier.
He bought it from a fella Owen who had bought and imported it from Sweden after seeing it over a number of years in a town near Ostersund Link to a map were he stays with mates he knows their.

In March 2006 it had this work done,

New VW 2.1 engine £1540
VW check over for warranty £37.30
Oil £15
Coolant hose £54
HT lead set £31.50
Exhaust cast knuckle £35
Exhaust gaskets etc £15
Drive belts £10
Exhaust brackets £70.50
Thermostat £13
Coolant £30
Labour £325
Fit headlamp & quickshift £25
Gearbox oil change £20
Diff oil change £20
Air filter £5
Pas Pipes £60
Poly rack bushes £34.50
Total = £2391

And in October 2006 it had this done,

Air filter cleaner £5
Oil Filter £7
Fuel filter £5
Spark plugs £10
Recon prop £200
Wishbone bushes £22
Rear wheel bearings £38
Track rod end £6.50
Fog lamp fitting £50
Bumper end cap £5
Ball joints £30
Break fluid £5
Horn £8
Gear lever repair kit £30.38
Idle speed control valve £119
Throttle body £20
Smoked lenses £75
Total = £747.16

Then March 2007it had,

The extra alloys that came with the van
New front wheel bearing
Longer wheel studs
New hub seals
Total = £425.35

Then in October 2007 it had,

MOT £50
Screen washer pump £8
Bumper end cap £5
2 hours labour
Total = £149.22

It was registered at the DVLA for Total = £131.50

New plates Total = £25.98

Its also got a mint set of captains seat in (god knows what they cost) and a kenwood stereo and for speakers so that's got to be another £500 on top.

So by my reckoning i got £8070.21 worth of van at least for my 5K and have the peace of mind that lots have been done.

Will have to wait for the price of sterling to pickup a bit against the euro too, pound aint worth "pooh" at the mo, this country is doomed bloody credit crunch.

won't cost nearly as much as going away driving one back to the Isle of Man, fly over drive it home, have fun doing it.

Don't do it if you want to save money, buying a Syncro will never be cheap.

I have brought a few vans back from Mike.I will PM you with details.
I don't think waiting for the pound to get stronger is going to help either.I don't think that is going to happen.

Loads of people telling me not to buy a Syncro are these Money pits?

what sort of money should i expect to pay for a good one?

what sort of cost should i budget for, whats the usual problems with them that will probs need sorting.

why is the advice to try and stay clear of them, are these a nightmare to keep in top condition.

Take it they need some looking after.

Jeds post sounds the better option for me to buy one of an enthusiast that has the work done for the right money.

what you think guy's

That's subjective not objective, so depends....

what sort of money should i expect to pay for a good one?

£2000 - £20,000

what sort of cost should i budget for, whats the usual problems with them that will probs need sorting.
If you pay £2000, budget about the same again..
If you pay £10,000+ budget about the same (£2000)
Usual problems...? Have you read the Wiki on Syncros and Buying Guide?
https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Syncro_-_Testing
http://www.club80-90syncro.co.uk/Syncro ... 0STORY.htm

why is the advice to try and stay clear of them, are these a nightmare to keep in top condition.
'Cos you're talking to people who haven't got one... or think you aren't up to owning one, fiscally, mechanically or...

Take it they need some looking after.
Of course, they're more complicated than 2WD's and like all T25s they're mostly 18 ~ 22 years old now !

Jeds post sounds the better option for me to buy one of an enthusiast that has the work done for the right money.
Of course...

what you think guy's

See above :)
oh HAPPY NEAR everyone!

Happy New Year Paul !

Hmmmm.
Yes they can be money pitsbut then aren't all vehicles really. Gearbox & Front diff/VC are you big cost items. But other than those, & a couple other, speciallist bits...... servicing, engine repairs, brakes are the same as any other T25.

I've had loads of different vehicles during my time Ranging from Beetles to Beamers, Vauxhalls to volvos, but Syncro is the best/most fun, allround vehicle I've ever owned.

Jed's plan does make alot of sense & is probably the best why to go about it. As long as you've got the 5/6 grand sitting down price.
If not take a chance on a 2K one. Have a real good look around it. You may be lucky.
Is it going to be your only car? Do you need a car everyday/daily driver?

:ok

2k to spend in parts/work on a 2k vehicle purchase...... I think you would have to be lucky.. prob a good bit more cash to fix it...

I have spent an easy 2000 on and still have to spend on my "nice" low mile (<100k) late (1992) truck I bought 3 years ago and I do ALL of the work myself, Aidan did the box and front diff... Ive managed to squeeze 35k miles out of its "aching bones" by replacing the bits that were broke/worn out and waiting for the spare time to complete the refurb of other components (I have a large box of new parts sitting waiting to go on, prob 500 quids worth again)
If you are gonna use it off road then maintenance will go up a bit too..

As its been said.. they are all getting on a bit now.. even mine which is one of the last produced is nearly 17 years old....

When the gearbox is starting to make noises or difficulty changing, you HAVE to do something about it ASAP or it will cost even more.. there are 8 cv joints and 2 UJ's in the driveline, tyres HAVE to be all the same make and wear (inc spare) the engine will be tired and will prob give some sort of issue at some point.. so it all adds up...

Jed's is a prime example of how to go about buying... the prev owner "enjoyed" the truck and spent the money, thats part of ownership..

Would I sell mine... nope, we have too much fun as a family, it has had to comute accross Europe, fetch and carry stuff about the place, it takes us on trips and adventures off roading, we wouldnt have met all the great fellow syncronauts in the Uk and France if not, so I will keep spending the money...

Its a passion.... if you can afford to be passionate about it, then you wont regret it...
