If i were you Paul i would do what i did when i bought my doka (not a 16'' though). This is the van,

Having got a 2wd camper i came to realise enthusiasts spend money on there vans, so when i wanted the syncro buying one off an enthusiast seemed to make sense rather than buy a dog and throw unknown amounts at it and there would always be lots of other people who would know and have seen the van in action. I just put a wanted add on all the vw forums saying what i wanted ideally and the sellers contacted me. The best ones i was offered were ones that wernt openly for sale yet and in the end chose the one that was perfect for me, tons of extras heated seats, power steering, engine pre heater, light washers, captains seats, opening rear windows etc etc even the right colour

I have just been putting all the paperwork in a new folder today (like a right saddo) and have been looking through the receipts, all work was done by Baxter so again this was a big selling point and peace of mind when buying.
I bought the van for £5000 in i think March 2008
It was bought by the previous owner for £3700 in September 2005 two and a half years earlier.
He bought it from a fella Owen who had bought and imported it from Sweden after seeing it over a number of years in a town near Ostersund Link to a map were he stays with mates he knows their.
In March 2006 it had this work done,
New VW 2.1 engine £1540
VW check over for warranty £37.30
Oil £15
Coolant hose £54
HT lead set £31.50
Exhaust cast knuckle £35
Exhaust gaskets etc £15
Drive belts £10
Exhaust brackets £70.50
Thermostat £13
Coolant £30
Labour £325
Fit headlamp & quickshift £25
Gearbox oil change £20
Diff oil change £20
Air filter £5
Pas Pipes £60
Poly rack bushes £34.50
Total = £2391
And in October 2006 it had this done,
Air filter cleaner £5
Oil Filter £7
Fuel filter £5
Spark plugs £10
Recon prop £200
Wishbone bushes £22
Rear wheel bearings £38
Track rod end £6.50
Fog lamp fitting £50
Bumper end cap £5
Ball joints £30
Break fluid £5
Horn £8
Gear lever repair kit £30.38
Idle speed control valve £119
Throttle body £20
Smoked lenses £75
Total = £747.16
Then March 2007it had,
The extra alloys that came with the van
New front wheel bearing
Longer wheel studs
New hub seals
Total = £425.35
Then in October 2007 it had,
MOT £50
Screen washer pump £8
Bumper end cap £5
2 hours labour
Total = £149.22
It was registered at the DVLA for Total = £131.50
New plates Total = £25.98
Its also got a mint set of captains seat in (god knows what they cost) and a kenwood stereo and for speakers so that's got to be another £500 on top.
So by my reckoning i got £8070.21 worth of van at least for my 5K and have the peace of mind that lots have been done.
