They are called a "flogging wrench" and a good way to spoil the nut, wheel rim, wheel arch, your wrists, teeth etc IMHO...if you get a siezed hub nut there's no guarantee that it will come undone by beating it to death with one of those anyway.

A socket and 3/4" slide bar will cost about £40 ("borrow" the scaff) but it's cheaper than getting the arch straightened out and repainted, never mind the fallout from a poorly torqued hub nut coming loose

I believe in the one and only, the almighty, indivisible flogging wrench..

never had a problem Ian, unlike when using a big long bar and the vehicle wants to climb up off the jack or move along the road. Never damaged a nut either, though young turks who haven'nt clue about swinging hammers may struggle and hit everything but the right part... :P

Those sorty of bearing breakups Jed, seem very usually on heavy campers, like Marks experience too... or the result of a previous brg replacement with wax bearings or a non-tight castle nut... maybe over-wheel & tyring the thing too. After all, that back hub/bearing sizing was basically specced for the bay windows, wasn't it?

PS. New slightly modded R/G gear ally bash-plate performing fine, well scraped but doing its job without rubbing too much

NB. Note the proper aeronautical spelling for ally everyone :rollin

Come to think of it the castle nut wasn't on all that tight. I actually went half a turn past the marks I made untlll I felt "the feeling" when you know it's on real good. I am off on a tour of Europe in the Westy tomorrow and will
be fitting the plate on when I get back. Thanks for the extra info

You mean "Caterpillar tight"? (as in big yellow machinery) Tighten it until it strips and then back it off half a turn
