iguana, did you get the gearbox code for us? I may have missed it. If it's had all those engines in it it may have the wrong gearbox altogether for what you want to do.

My 1.7 will do 45 in fourth at those kind of revs but I have a five speed box. I'm guessing the revs because no, not all diesels have rev counters they were an optional extra from VW on vans.

Once you have the code you can use the excelent gearbox code, engine code, ratio chart on brick-yard.co.uk to figure out where it came from and what should be in it.

At the same revs the speedo would be showing the same speed :?:

Thats a VERY big difference for a change in width of the tyre to 205.. Even going from a 14 road tyre to a 15 off-road tyre (quite high AR) think mine just about put the speedo back to spot on according to a GPS, so presumed it was reading no more than 10% high anyway (7 mph)

Clive, I worked out that my syncro was about 10% high on the reading too, so the bigger tyres will correct that..

3750rpm is not flat out.. but a lot of older D's dont do more than 4500-5000
the 1.6CT Aircooled i had was geared for about 4000rpm at 60, which is prob what your box is.. the old wheazy 1.6 d wouldnt pull an awfull lot more than that loaded either..

Yes agree. Mark said exactly correct viz his GPS, so I can't quite see how a tyre width change or even a 15 and a bigger tyre can give you 10-15 mph, but nice to be proved wrong...

didnt have gps then, going off the vehicle dials 10 mph was about right. better fuel consumption too, i run a transport company and did about 1700 miles a week in it, i would even say it was like a driving different truck.

DONT KNOW IF THIS HELPS BUT WHEN YOU PULL OFF IN FIRST GEAR ITS LIKE A CRAWLER GEAR ITS ONE QUICK BLIP OF THE THROTTLE AND ITS TIME TO CHANGE AT AROUND 10 MPH,3RD GEAR AROUND 17-18 AND FOURTH GEAR AROUND 25-27 AND THEN LOADS OF REV UPTO 45 YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

what size are the tyres? i really think it sounds like a 90 instead of an 80 or 70 will help. for instance- say if your tyres are 185/70/14, go for 195/80/14 or 15", 16" do you know what im rambling on about? like i say ive got the same kind of problem 1.9 in a 1.6, it trevs too high.. i just think new wheels and tyres is less strife than a new box(a perfectly good box too)

I'm in Birmingham and I run a 1.9n/a diesel with a 4 speed box and it does about 75 in top (depends on wind conditions) (reminds I must go and pick up my spoiler from gerrman)

anyway I change from 1st to 2nd pretty quickly
2-3rd 15-20mph
3 - 4th about 35-40mph depending on what type of road - motorways or big roads you change later to use extra torque and revs to get to speed

are you running on all four cylinders? undo each union on the pipes on top of each injector one at a time and only just undo them. If you don't get a change in engine speed then that particular cyclinder isn't running.

Note: don't think it could be a 5sp with a 4sp linkage because 1st is bottom left and he would probably be thinking he needs a new clutch or a hill to get moving

185/70/14 70 is a pretty low profile tyre for a van. i am in the same position as you, increase the profile to 80, or put 195/80/14 on the rear 185/80/15, 195/80/15 get some alloys off a granada/scorpio 15 or 16 inch, make sure the tyres are "C" rated or reinforced, thats my next move too, ive got some stiauto alloys off a merc 16" but they are 8j and dont know if theyre too wide??

yo folks ive just been on ebay again(saaaaaaaaaaaaaad!)theres a few sets of 15" alloys on from granadas and passats, with 195 80 15's on that should solve my problem do you all think?,it will be a quick and easy solution to my probs then i will only need to re-do my clocks with some lovely sticker type affairs and im off to burn some motorway rubber....what % increase on the speed will there be from a 185 r 14 to a 195 80 15 do you reckon, and will i have to buy longer studs for front and back and get the centres bored out(not a problem) and different wheel nuts for the back?????????????????????????????????????????????
