Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
Good to hear from you will. Where have you been.
Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
It’s looking good, good luck on it. I suspect my ongoing fiasco (the fiasco part is all my own work, it was going very well when the nutz guys were working on it!) will show you some pointers as to what not to do!
I would like to say that if i had a workshop as good as yours i would have breezed through it, but that would be an obvious lie..!
I will be watching with interest

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
Finally got the camper out of the workshop. Awning from ebay fitted.
http://gallery.me.com/richlloyd#100212" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Then the turbo blew up!!!
Wow these vans cost some money.
I had always planed to do an engine conversion so after lots of discussion with Lee and Mazz she went off the Telford for an AFN installation.
The performance is unbelievable, pulls in 3rd from 15/18mph and from 22/24 mph in 4th. 55mph at 3000 revs and still pulling hard at 4500 revs which is close to 80mph, yes I did say 80mph.
Will put photos of engine bay up soon with some figures on economy.
Next issue is gear box rebuild as she is slipping out of 1st.
Aiden is a wealth of experience and has been really helpful with advice, so booked in and hopefully all will be well this side of Xmas, after spending a load more!!!
Cheers Rich

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
Saw yours at Mario's last week. You have done a cracking job.
Mario's installation looked very good too. Will be very interested in seeing what MPG you are getting.
Mines going in next month for the same but without the injector upgrade. With my current gearing and tyres I should be getting just shy of 100mph at 4500rpm!! Dunno how long it would last at that RPM though.

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
Hi Tom.
Thanks for the kind words. Van looks and drives great. Can't claim all the credit though as most was done by a mate in Swansea and Mario in Telford did engine conversion.
Pics here http://gallery.me.com/richlloyd#100232" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Got to say Mario has been superb. Kept me informed all through the job of what was happening, and gave loads of good advice when there were decisions to made. Will definately use him again when I do Doka.
Decision made on gearbox works. Both the box on Doka and Camper are jumping out of 1st so work needs to be done soon. Doka is 486 and Camper 543. Seeing as Doka will be main off road vehicle and camper main on road vehicle decided to take 486 out of Doka and send to Aiden for 2nd V 1.14 and .73. This will then go back in the camper with the front diff to match. Day to swap over then 543 from camper will go back into Doka with diff to match. Secret funds being strained and some of my precious camera kit is having to be sold to fund the works. But hey I can always rebuy that, better to get boxes fixed before they really cost a load.
Will post up mpg as soon as I fill up. So far done 347 miles on 3/4 of a tank. All around Gower lanes between sites. Not nursed her at all as its still a novelty to have so much power. Def needs the legs to be lengthened as she feels like I need to change up a gear at 50mph.
Cheers Rich

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
I'm calculating that at roughly 29.75mpg. That's pretty much bob on what Mario said. I'd be well happy with that.
My box is 4.57, running 225 70 16 Tyres so I'm hoping that'll be okay.
What speed/rpm will you be getting with the 4.86/.73?

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
Well quite happy after filling up and driving pretty hard for 356miles. Took 49.47litres to fill which I make 10.89 gallons, giving 32.78mpg. Set up is 1.9 eTDi(AFN) with larger injectors. standard 543 box with 215/75/15 general grabbers. Very pleased with these figures, hoping they will get better if I drive a bit more sensibly and better again when 486 box fitted with longer 3rd and 4th.

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
Ahhh 29 mpg I dream of that. I get 21 if I am gentle in the VR6. I have had my van up to a ton before I bottled it. Didn't have my brown trousers on at the time so thought I would leave it at that. It would have gone faster. I normally sit around the 65 mark on the motorway.
Cheers

Re: Syncro Caravelle to Camper Project
just filled the van up again. Driving far more sensibly this time, though not exactly like an old gent in a trilby! got 461miles on 55.15litres. I make that about 38mpg. Well pleased for a high top camper!

That's bloody brilliant.
How does it pull compared to a 2.1 petrol?
