From what you have said (gear change has become clunky) it sounds like the fluid loss is probably a leaking clutch slave cylinder (mounted on top of the gearbox bell housing, as seen with the engine cover removed at the back of the engine bay)

The fluid is DOT4 universal clutch and brake fluid.

But as this resevoir services both the clutch and brake systems, a thorough check needs to take place as I wouldn't want to steer you in the wrong direction to find you've suffered brake failure.

Find the leak and you will find the fault.
