I generally cruise at around 55-60mph. The 1.6TD will push the van along faster, but fuel economy starts to suffer and I like to give the old beast an easy time of it. I get over 35mpg if I keep the speed down a little.

I cruise at around 60-65 all day, which drops to 45-55 on any hills, with judicious use of the gear stick and left foot. Might touch 70 if i have to overtake, but the deep rumbling moan that comes from the back makes me slow down as soon as I can.
Interestingly I fitted a tacho the other day, and the change in speed at the top end doesn't register much, seems to sit at either 2900 or 3100 when going from 60 to 70, which I'm sure can't be right.
Just to add it is a DF with a 5 speed.

Had it off of the vw clock a few times but 107mph on the sat nav once in a different country.
Not with a standard non modified 1.9DG When brand spanking new and just run in we could only get them to do a ton and thats indicated speed in reality it was less what are you running a scooby lump
I have had my 1.9DG up to 88 Indicated once as I was overtaking a snail on the phone who decided to put his foot down but at that speed the rings where rattling wouldnt like to sustain that for long
First long trip we did down to Devon from Maidenhead Berks I was flying down the motorway about 75-80 all the way sweet as a nut and kept overtaking other T25's going much slower thought they must have knackered engines Got to Exeter and found out why they where going slower did a whole tank of fuel

Nowdays unless Im running late its a slow and steady 60-65

taking the earth's rotational speed and orbit speed around the sun into account then my van is as we speak travelling between 67,000 and 69,000 mph and not using a drop of fuel in the process
if i factored in the expansion rate of the universe and spin of our galaxy it would be..... oh thats just getting silly.
relatively speaking

when i 1st got my t25 devon poptop 2.0 Aircooled i too it from nuneaton to rugby on the m6 & got a genuine 96mph, i have the the nice 4 speed Aircooled gearbox though, generally i travel around 60-65 but when i get my bus back on the road i'll be traveling at 56mph, why..................i've been doing general testing with various cars & vans in the houshold & even if the engine is petrol or diesel 56mph gives the best mpg!
i find the truckers really helpful when going slow on the motorways!!!
my lhd diesel tintop i have not done a top speed run LOL but i travel @ a speedo indicated 100kph (62.somat mph) & its smooth as silk but if i had the spare cash i'd like to put a better gearbox that allows lower revs & higher cruising speed
high revs (over revving) kill engines ppl consistant speed be it 50 60 70 80 for long periods is what our motoers are desighned for
to be honest i like traveling around 55-65 you see more as a driver!
where as at 80 90 100 which i used to drive in my old 1988 nissan sylvia you're forced to watch every other driver on the road 7 use alot of concentraition

Since petrol went through the roof, the accelerator pedal has become something I only press if I REALLY REALLY have to. She'll cruise at 70 no probs (85 flat out) but I've adopted an air of "I get there when I get there" and then I don't have to fill up quite so often....

Weirdly, I find the journey seems to pass quicker when you relax and slow down a bit.

Yep have to agree
Get behind the wheel of my Nissan doing the school run and its all 'get out of my bloody way' - 'what are you doing?' etc etc
Switch over to the camper and its like i've just taken a stress pill - we get there whenever. So what if we break down? theres enough food in here to keep us going for weeks.
Sometimes when we're camping the wife wakes up in the middle of the night says 'i love our van' then goes back to sleep.
When i get hold of this Ourvan bloke i'm going to kill him.

I'm pretty laid back in the car too most of the time - but on a nice clear stretch of road I can't resist a nice bit of shove-you-back-in-your-seat acceleration. Which frankly, the camper isn't much good for...

I have yet to fix the mirror folding in issue that seems to affect all these vans so I prefer to stay out in the middle lane/outer lanes and do less lane swapping.
They are really easy to sort out, even I managed it.
Mine's 2L Aircooled with the 4 speed box, 55-60 feels comfortable and it will keep that 'speed' going up moderate hills. I've no idea of the mpg as the fuel guage is very erratic so I fill up whenever it gets to the lower quarter. I was surprised at first how many other vehicles are pootling along at similar speeds in the slow lane, not just big trucks and old bangers, and I don't find being boxed in an issue. I prefer to avoid the motorway if I'm not going so far as it's a more interesting drive and a lot of roads have a 50 limit which suits me fine, although I know mpg will be better on the motorway.

Re: how fast do you go? petrol boxer 1.9 vroom vroom ..
I've been running my van empty after removing the interior about a year ago. Empty, fuel consumption went through the roof and struggled to get more than 55-60mph no matter road or conditions. Now heres the kicker, started fitting the new interior and the consumption is coming back inline and speeds of 75mph are reached with realtive ease. In fact she cruises really nicely at 60-65mph with only the barest touch of go-juice. Appart from the increase in load the only other difference can be the road clearance has reduced as the weight has gone back in. So... can this be a reduction in drag under the van? Lets face it these vans were designed as commercial vehicals and as such to carry loads in the most economic way. But can the germans really be that good!?

Flip that's good![]()
107 MPH and 33-35 mpg @ 65mph![]()
What motor is that then ?
Perhaps more importantly who services it ? (diy ?)
The advantages of scooby 2.2 power... honestly, its goes bloomin well...

Re: how fast do you go? petrol boxer 1.9 vroom vroom ..
tricky to tell how fast i am going - the needle hovers between 100/110kph so i recon thats about 65mph. thats a 1.6td with a 4 speed box.
got up to Wetherby from London in 4 hours and that was with a widdle and a refuel. i planned on it taking four hours and it therefore did! as to fuel consumption - i put in 9 gallons on an empty tank in peterborough - drove to wetherby and back to london (about 330 miles) so i am happy with the consumption at that speed (although there was a considerable following wind down the A1 today).
All of this is dependent on the accuracy of the instruments/gauges which i wouldnt swear to.
As to the price of fuel.......I can swear to that

60 mph 3000rpm =1 mile a minute cruising along just enough so as not to get under the feet of the hgv,s
