well to be honest I never did one before , which means, u can do 9 years in past and also I did through a tax club here and they can submit later

new box sounds good with my reconditioned gearbox (so nice new selectors and SA-oil plate) sounds good

should I get a WBX then? or go bigger?

OK, gave my bus over to my mechanic for November (im away on business during this time anyway). He's gonna have a look at the gearbox and engine etc. This guy is great, his whole family works in the garage with him in the middle of the country (so I dont mind leaving the city and city prices). He seemd quite excited about getting to do some real mechanical work as opposed to body work, I guess. Or just happy about the pay day coming from me! He is more for repairing components rather than swapping complete boxes out, as he thinks u can never be sure what parts are in there.
There isnt an Aidan in every country

He had a quick drive in it and some made some comments, stating that although the grinding is quite loud, the syncro ring feels OK (can he feel this?) clutch seems fine and gear selection seems fine (ive never had any gear selection issues). He will put on the SA-oil plates too

also gonna go a compressions test on the engine to find out if its worth repairing it (water jacket gasket etc, he also noticed a few leaks from pipes etc) and then while the engine is out, do some light body work in the engine compartment.

So, the garage has so far quoted me this for the gearbox parts, so basically tells us what was broken. Ive translated them from German to English, if you see some funny words!

  • Quantity = German = English
  • 1 = Südafrikableche = South African Panels
  • 1 = Spanmutter = clamping/splitting nut
  • 4 = Syncronringe = synchroniser ring
  • 2 = Dichtdeckel Atriebswellen = driveshaft seal lid
  • 2 = Wellendichtringe = shaft sealing ring
  • 2 = Hauptlager = main bearing
  • 4 = Kugelkäfig = ball bearing retainer
  • 1 = Nadelkäfig = needle cage
  • 2 = O-Ring = O-Ring
  • 1 = Wellendichtring = shaft sealing ring
  • 1 = Kugellager = Ball Bearing
  • 1 = Syncroneinheit (gebraucht (neu 140 Euro)) = Syncro (Used (new 140 Euro))
  • 1 = Schaltrad 1 Gang gebraucht = 1st Gear Wheel (Used)
  • 1 = R-Rad gebraucht = Reverse Gear Wheel (Used)
  • 1 = Führungsmuffe = synchroniser hub

For all of the above approx 600 euro

I didnt put the individual prices here,if you want them, contact me?

Then the gasket set for both cylinder heads too at 350 euro. So all in all 1000 euro grand for the parts so far.

They also told me that the engine is already been took apart, so guess no issues with the old "can of worms" so far.

Got the bus back today

runs much quieter now the gearbox has been repaired, now have to learn the new gear changes, as before it was totally wrong

engine runs like a dream too from the start. I need to get used to the low horse power again, as been driving a new car around recently
