the heater has a pump which circulates the whole cooling system, heating the coolant as the engine would, so if you were to switch the van heater fan on, hot air would come out as if the engine had been running....... this means that the engine gets less cold start wear, which is when much of the damage is done, and why you shouldnt rev a cold engine.......

On my Webasto I have plumbed it into the heater return line (blue arrow) by blanking off where the 15mm rubber hose comes back from the front and into the L shaped metal coolant pipe which feeds the thermostat.
The output shown by the red arrow tees into the pipe that bleeds the water pump. When the engine is running the coolant is pushed through the webasto, and gets rid of any air, it is static bleeding as the output pipe runs uphill into the expansion pot.
When the unit fires up it takes about 15 minutes to get the system fully hot, and warms the engine into the first segment of the temp gauge, about a mile of driving has her fully warmed up. It is almost as quick as driving.
When you stop driving you just turn the webasto on, and it keeps the interior very warm. Really good.
