oh balls, I took apart the ball joint thing and it appears just difficult to get it out of third gear, you can do it if you are raising the clutch with the engine running. I dont think that is related to the oniony things is it.

The gear seems fine when I am using it just not smooth change in and out and gets jammed in. maybe I will use it as a security device.

What ball-joint thingy? The one in the cab floor?

So, took it apart and... didn't put it back together, or did or... found something, or didn't?

The back bush and ball/socket joint need to be in good condition first and foremost... just removing gummed up grease from bush and its shell-like cup support under gbox can make a bit of difference, but a new bush is only a few quid. Degrease shaft and lube the whole bush, inside and out. Pack boots with grease.

Even turning the socket around on end of rod might help...

the ball joint at gearbox end..

it has very little lube, no boot as in it is split into two, what bush?

when I put it into third with the ball joint not connected just using the ball end it would not come back out of third gear, I need to join it all back up like that then get it out of third gear from the cab with the engine running.

The one we've been talking about a lot lately in Tech, the rear sliding bush, in the spherical cup, that locates the selector rod at the back off the gearbox.

maybe I will look again, I only felt / saw a metal cup, a metal ball in the cup and a completely split (eg no longer joined) boot, the metal draws without any restriction from the cup.

How is the selector rod held up there so the rod doesn't drop down?

Think the whole rod layout is even pictured in the WIki - if not, I will soon correct that omission!

Penultimate image, the parts on the horizontal section of the rod... with the two black rubber bellows either side...

Will add a picture of the bush itself...
