All connections cleaned up and still no luck. So have removed starter - suspect that starter is U/S
Trip to Doncaster tomorrow I suspect for a replacement.
Mike - Thanks for the other to pop round and help. But I'll be OK thanks. Cheers anyway.

Mine broke yesterday as well.
Just started clicking and nothing else.
Checked the contacts, still clicking.
Took it off, bridged the connections on a battery and it was throwing the gear rotor forwards, but not spinning.
Spent all day finding a replacement GSF £102 was the available one in th end.
Put it back on and all OK.
Interesting that the old one was running fine until it just clicked and died.
I did dismantle it and try to clean the insides but it was no use.
Could be worth carrying a spare or replacing if a long journey ie abroad is planned, failure without warning is not good

Mine was exactly the same, I was only thinking the day before how impressed I was at how well it started, and then it just completely packed in without warning, I'm sure there was a buring spell which I guess was the solenoid burning out - or it might have been me imagining things!
If you were on a long journey I you could do without one and just park facing downhill and jump start it Little Miss Sunshine style.

New stater motor arrived today and fitted. Van started after a couple of goes and everything seemed OK
Anyway switched her off then decided I'd take her for a short run out, turned the key and nothing, tried several times to get it started but nothing, new starter motor wasn't even turning just a click (again!)
checked conections on solenoid - everthing present and correct (I did notice the solenoid was a little warm)
If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them
Just in case you need to know its a 2 ltr Aircooled.
Thanks
Shaun

A few things to check :
Did you replace the gearbox bush ?
Check the engine/ gearbox to body earthing strap.
Using a well charged battery .
Take the starter motor out, connect an earth lead from the battery to the casing. conect a live lead from the battery to the live connection bolt on the solenoid. Touch a connection onto the spade terminal and the live lead.
The end of the motor should shoot out and spin. If it doesn't , then the motor is faulty.
If it does, then check the wiring to the motor, or maybe suspect worn ring gear on the flywheel.

Earthing strap removed, cleaned and replaced - including contacts to body.
Did not replace gearbox bush - what is this and where does it go?
Had starter motor checked by my local mechanic - he informs me that it was not working correctly - may have been supplied a dodgy starter.
Cheers

Joda,
gear box bush on the 2lt cu is detailed in the wiki - but in short, the hole that the metal nose of the starter locates into has the bush in it - it looks like a piece of copper piping. If its chewed, the van won't start. If its a littel damaged, it may start on occassion!

Prior to starter motor going the van always started first time. Have taken a look at the gearbox bush currently in and from what I can see it appears to be intact and not chewed up.
Do you have to replace the bush when putting on a new starter motor?
If you don't what are the consequences?
Cheers
Shaun
Apologies if this appears twice I seem to be having a few probs with the PC.

nah you don't have too....just as they only cost pennies, it is usually done to elimate it as a cause of not starting....but if yours looks ok, and is solid all the way round, then its probably not too worn to work. Upto you what you do - but the repacement starter shoud hve come with one - mine did.
have to look elsewhere possibley as towhy it aint starting
intermittant starting is a sign of bush being unevenly worn

It looks solid all the way around. Hopefully the replacement starter will be here tomorrow, the last one they sent was was no good, it only managed to start the Van once before dying.
Hopefully the replacement will be better than the last one they sent.
Have had no problems with the starting until last week.
