Re: knocking noise
As long as they're 'grippy'
Its a dirty, awkward, horrible job but you can make it easier by jacking up offending wheel enough so that you can put the head of a club hammer underneath tyre to lock it solid. The reason I say this is because when you're working underneath with a tool on an extension bar, you'll only get to two bolts at a time. The hammer locks the wheel so you can apply some pressure when tightening said bolts then remove hammer, turn wheel to next two bolts and stick the hammer in again. I was a mobile Aircooled tech for 25 years and learnt that one. Saves having to keep getting out from under just to get them done.
Do wear gloves. CV grease isn't easy to remove from fingernails or good for your hands. Comes out of clothes no prob if you put washing up liquid directly on stain before it goes in washing machine.

Re: knocking noise
To my knowledge thats the first case I've seen where the CV bolts were caught before the final ones gave way. What usually happens is the owner notices but ignores the knock and then on pullaway from a junction the last ones break or part company with a loud bang and you find yourself stranded in busy traffic. Just be glad it was correctly diagnosed and fixed.
