Corrosion.. that sort of damage to the ribs on those cases can be corrosion, if salt has got on top of the box and enever been washed off.

Maybe the lugs were also corroded badly too, and repaired with steel plates, or they were in fact cut off to remove at scrapyard if its a replacement.

How old is your syncro? An early one has thinner weaker case castings, even a different alloy to later ones maybe: more prone to corrosion (I think ))
