More heater problems...

Post by johncelliot »

I am still having trouble with the heating system in my van. I have verified that the directional slider (the one that directs air to the front vents or to the defrost vents) is working and I have verifed that the temperature slider is working. The fan speed switch also works fine. The trouble is, when I drive around, hot air is force through the vents, even when I have the heater off. I can't see any way to shut this air off! It seems like there is some kind of vent that allows air to flow from the outside, over the radiator and into the cabin. Soon it will be cold enough, that I will be happy to have it, but for now it is a bit stuffy.

Does this sound the same as other vans? Am I missing some kind of control to close off the vent to the outside?

As always, thanks for the help.

Heater controls

Post by Fritz »

John, I can't understand why you only mention 2 control levers on your heater panel,,,, :(

As our van of the same year has 3 levers which work as follows,,,,,

Top lever :::pushed to far left = OFF,,,,,, pushed to far right = Screen^

Middle lever::::" " " left =Cold,,,,,,,, " " " right = Hot

Bottom lever : " " " left= Footwell,,, " " " right = OFF

Hope this is some consolation,......

Regards

Fritz,,,,,,, :D

Hi Fritz - this is helpful information. Thanks!

The reason I only mention two sliders is because the third (the footwell control) is missing, and currently, I have permanently closed the footwell vent.

The information that I did not realize is that the top lever turns it off when it is set to the far left. This may be the answer to my problems. I will give it a try. Thanks again.

I had simular problem.
The heater control levers open and shut metal flaps that have a foam strip on them to seal them shut. If this perishes then they dont shut all the way. I managed to replace the footwell ones with some foam from an air filter. Managed to do this in situ but the demist ones will have to wait for when I dismantle the heater in the winter to oil up the fan which has siezed.
Hope this helps.

I've got 4 sliders. The bottom 2 seem to slide ok but I don't really notice what they do, the heat control doesn't work dut to a snapped cable and a missing heat distributer that goes onto the riser on the heat exchanger and vent one just about does the windscreen/foot vents cos one of the cables on it was bent. Other than that, they're great! Oh yeah, and it doesn't light up at night either.

Dubstar - I guess I should be just thankful for what I have! Sounds like your heating system is even more pants than mine!

BB - I think mine may be suffering from the perished foam a bit too. I could not get the foot vent to close off completely because of this.

When I bought my van I shut the vents and we were covered in rotted foam stips that belched out of the screen vent

Top slider all the way to the left does the trick. Still a bit of hot air seeping through, but not too much. With the heater fixed and the buzzer fixed, my wife might actually ride in the van without complaining!
