Fuse keeps a-blowin'.....

Post by macthejaffa »

The fuse for my wipers and screenwash jet had blown so I replaced it with another identical one, a red 16amp ceramic one, and as soon as I turned the key my temp warning light suddenly started going beserk and then after a couple of seconds the fuse blew again.....I'm thinking it could be a short somewhere in the circuit but am not really sure where to start looking or what to look for! Any help much appreciated..........

Try removing every plug connector to each item you have listed (wiper switch/washer pump) and try again by turning on the ignition, if the fuse is still blowning then you may well have a wiring fault which is simply a matter of tracing each wire carefully which may be going to ground. (shorting out).

If the fuse stays intact then the fault will lie with either the washer pump or the wiper motor or the column switch.

PS, personally I'd be trying another washer pump as these give more trouble than the others....

Wiper motor is behind the glove box, remove glove box (see thread yesterday on this) then unplug the wiper motor and try what Fritz says. If in doubt, seek an auto-electrician and splash some cash. Note that electrical problems are notorious for taking time to find, so £20-£30 an hour can soon end up with a big bill for something that could be as simple as a trapped/broken wire or connector.

Right I've sussed out the problem....the heater blower switch had failed so swapped it with a new one from JK and hey presto! Working wipers....there is a but tho, if I have the wipers on and heater on 3 setting the fuse blows again, but its fine if heaters on setting 1 or 2.......it'll do for now tho.......cheers for all the advice guys and happy chugging

Huh - was just about to say that! Strangely if the blower seizes and you switch it on, you'll get same result - as I found in torrential rain on a motorway one day - NO WIPERS!

Was at least six miles before i found an exit and could replace the fuse.

...and if your ceramic fuse has a dirty contact at one end, you can switch your blower on and drive for about 15 mins before you think...

"What's that funny smell?"

It turns out the when you melt the clear plastic cover on your fusebox, it smells like fish.
