Temp gauge - where should the needle be?
Hi
only had the van a few weeks so might be an easy one.
Just got my van back from tha garage where they replaced both my oil sensors and fluid sensors, due to a disco effect on the dash.
now when driving around town today the pointer is about 2/3 over to the right, before the work it was smack in the middle. I can hear the fan in the front.
its a 2.1 the way.
Cheers

It should really be smack in the middle to be honest. A little to the right but not much if youre giving the engine a flaking. Sounds like youve got an overheating problem there, my good man. Either that or they fitted the wrong sensor. Or maybe forgot the bleed the radiator after the work (that would be major league stupid though).

its quite common for the gauge to read differently when a new sender is fitted, keep an eye on it, and dont worry too much, if in doubt keep a kneee on the heater temp, (first sign of an airlock is heater temp decreasing without warning)
VW say that "normal" is anywhere from the end of the first white box to the end of the other end white box, so if it is anywhere between, but not in those two white squares, it is "normal"

Temp - needle
Hi
Cheers for the reply, I have taken it back to the garage and asked them to fit a genuine temp sender.
Hopefully this should sort it out..... will keep you posted.

... so the original one can't have had much wrong with it
A genuine one = a VW one?
Main thing is, watch it for movement not absolute position unless very high, that's what is being said above it seems.

If the rad fan is coming on then its prob reading real... what else did they screw around with? did they bleed the system correctly?
Rad fan system works off a switch in the rad and will only come on when the rad is hot...
dont ignore this until everything has been double checked and found to be good..
"disco effect on the dash isnt to do with senders in any case.. normally bad earth/poor connections for the dash pod.

flashing light
I had something similar the light would flash then go off as it should then occasionally it would come on as i was driving. if i stopped and restarted the engine it went off - yes i checked the coolant each time! Occasionally it wouldnt go off at all.
So thats why i took it back to the garage i bought it from oh along with the oil light and buzzer going off. All very alarming on your first trip away and 200 miles from home :o0
How do you bleed the system is there a valve to open?

Bleeding the system is in the "wiki"
WHich red light flashing? in the temp gauge? that does an auto check at start up and flashes... if it comes on while driving, its either over temp or water level low in the header tank.. but when the sensor gets covered in crud it can give a false reading or if its leaking around the electrical contacts on the top...
Dash contact strip must be in good nick, the earth is taken back to the earth point under the dash.. the plastic foil is easily damaged though... s be carefull..

Gauge update
Just an update...
Well got it back from the garage, they have fitted a genuine sender and the pointer is in the middle just where it should be.
No disco & a working temp gauge = happy Clive
