eh jed i have one of those filters on mine just binned the old box got one of those universal ones with the different rubber rings to fit and hey presto dont know if it makes any difference on the perfomance side but it sounds good on mine 1.9dg go on do it only around £20 and i got a blue one sweet!!

got it of fleabay mate just go to cars accesories then performance and type in airfilter in top left hand search bar just make sure its a universal fit sounds really good in a tunnel love it drop it down a gear and floor it sounds mint

Dave,
You must understand that stuff on Jeds van is safety protection and storage for young Isiac ( Junior Jed ), the sunvisor so Dad dont get blinded by the sun and the box on the back for push chair etc.
I personally think the box on the back is a large fridge for Jeds lager.

I put one of them K & N air filters on a 2.1 with a free flow exhaust on and it certainly went nicely, and it should last the same as five or six paper ones if looked after, so costs the same as regular changes.
I keep all the pipework intact though as syncros want to be splash proof plus.
Have a genuine vw extra dusty filter to fit, but not sure if there's any difference really - only way would be to do filter swaps on a rolling road, which i would do if ever on one.

The less restrictions in the passage of air into an engine is a good thing.
Cool air is another good thing.
Fitting a K&N style filter will show an improvement on any engine, negligable admittedly on some but an improvement non the less.
Plus, as said when service time comes around just rinse it out (with the proper fluid) and re oil it (again with the correct fluid)
K&N replacement elements will fit in youe exsisting air box.
Cone filters fitted in the engine bay are a bad thing, noise, they draw warm dirty air from the engine bay and have no facility for carb icing.
Fit a replacement element, cheap, easy mod.
