Eberspacher - what bit does what

Post by robo »

Hiya.

got an eberspacher on my 1983 diesel, it hasn't worked since I owned the van and i'm trying to fix it. Before I start can anyone help me with the following:

1. How can I tell what type of eberspacher I have?

2. There is a twisty green knob with a light, and next to it there is a knob that can be pulled out, what does it do? the cable from it seems to go under the van somewhere, but I can't see where. (Incidentally this is also the part that stopped the heater working, I can see where the outer housing for this push/pull cable broke and subsequently wore through the cables for the green twisty control thing, causing the eberspacher to fuse. )

3. Finally, there are three levers on the standard heater control, two of these have cables that control the windscreen heat and passenger heat. The last one goes through the chassis just in front of the gearstick (right next to the brake lines), and goes into what look likes a valve just behind the radiator fan, what is this for? as the push\pull cable broke and I need to know what I am doing before I replace it.

your broken cable controls hot/cold temp of the heater matrix by controling flow of hot water through the matrix itself

yup it's a LHD, not a westy though. under the left side of the van about half way down. I have to remove the big bit of pressed metal underneath the van to look at it. Looks like the hot air is going to blow out a small flap near the drivers feet, as well as the one into the passenger compartment. Maybe that is what the other mysterious lever controls.

So the heater matrix takes water returning to the radiator and heats the cab? Nothing to do with the eberspahcer. That would explain why it is so damn hot all the time. Am going to try and remove some of the cable housing until I have enough cable protruding to fix it back through the control lever.
