speaker sizes?

Post by pimpdriver »

I have a speaker in each front door of my 88E panel van.

One of the speakers has no rubber bit between the cone and the frame! They are 10cm speakers.

I have a JVC CD player that I will stick in which has 4 x 45W output I think

What is the best option for improving the sound? Will 6*9 speakers fit???

JBL, Sony, Pioneer???

Cheers,

Steve

I've got probably the biggest circular Pioneer speakers you can fit in the lower door in mine. Was advised they would sound better than 6*9's, which wouldn't fit anyway - would have had to be 5*7s if anything.

at one point i chopped out part of the door to fit 8" subs in the bottom each! and i reckon if i chopped out a bitmore i'd have got 10s in so 6*9s don't fit if you have the wrong immagination!!!

t'aint the size, it's the quality of the installation and the amount of spank. Match them to your intended head unit (i.e. 45W RMS approximately, and no lower). 4" cones are never going to be the last word in bass response due to the laws of physics; good stuff starts happening around 5.25" (according to my ex, anyway... gah 8) . A good pair of 2-way 6" speakers should do the job for you, but consider adding an amp to match their design RMS power. The soundstage will be too low with the speakers at the bottom of the doors, so consider a 2-way separates system (with remote crossovers) and mounting the tweeters higher to raise the soundstage. Then you'll lose some of the stereo imaging instead, so you pays your money and takes your choice.

Brandwise, JBL or Infinity (same firm, different packaging and price levels, but Infinity Reference kit is excellent) are good VFM. Pioneer are highly overrated imho, and Kenwood, JVC, Sony etc not worthy of consideration, again imho. You get only what you pay for, and most brands charge you double for their hype (like Sony's XPlod... strictly for teenage burger joint employees, and having no place in a system built for audiophile listening imho).

Fit them properly and securely; if they vibrate, that's half of their output gone before you start, and a lot of annoyance when the volume goes up. Always weigh size against the amount of cutting, filing and fabrication you'll need to do to fit them properly. Not to be underestimated.

One last comment - bass is omnidirectional, so you don't need to fit subs in the doors... just stick them behind the seats instead and it'll sound just as good, if not better.
