wont start, think its distributor

Post by belle in progress »

hello i have a 1.9 dg from 87.
4 weeks ago my carb packed in and i managed to track one down to vanfest.
during the 3 weeks the carb wasnt working i was constantly starting the van whilst driving untill just before vanfest she conked out and hasnt started since
i got the carb on with no problems but cant get to the bottom of not starting
got a man round who said that the power is there untill it gets to the distributor, no spark at plugs, changed 1 plug and no spark.
tracked down another distributor and fitted but still no spark
the new distributor has a different rotor arm inside (not sur if this matters.

any advice on what else i could try, i have very basic engine skills so please type slowly

See if you can borrow a coil and swap it out. Be absolutely certain that this isn't the problem before you do anything else. The problem if you're a novice is that you can end up with an engine so far out of tune in an effort to pin down a problem.
