aerial shot was of 2003, they organise a setup like that every 4 years. I guess next year it will be the giant T3/T25 ?

Re: VANFEST "Big Brick/T25" Display

Post by SYMCRO »

Sorry to dissapoint,

But, there are no plans in place @ moment for any more "Big Type" displays @ Vanfest.

It is not because we don't want to it is because of the shear amount of work it takes to produce the end result & the fact that at Malvern now there simply is not the space available (or spare manpower resourses) anymore to do another display.
This year we also managed to fill the entire south car park (the area used previously for the Big displays) with day visitors. Next year this area may well be part of the camping.

It is very unlikely (even if we were able to plan another display!) that it would work (at that size) with a T25.
Reasons being, despite what people may think there are still barriers between the different Vw models & simply getting enough transporters together (ie non t25's included) in one place at particular times to do a display (which would require around 600 vehicles to build and stay in place until photo sessions complete!)) is very difficult. I would need to have at least 800 -1000 vehicles committed & signed up before even considering doing another Big display to allow for the massive amount of "no shows" we encountered @ the previous displays.

I/we have explored the option(s) of doing a T25. Although it looks very pretty to most of us T25 fans it is a difficult one to scale up to look good front view on (compared to Bay & Split) Getting the roundal right and other smaller detail right would be a particular problem. We have looked at doing a side on or 3/4 view as well, again very difficult to get the right effect.

There is no way I would consider doing another Big display if I was not confident of it being a success. We came very close to failure with both of the previous displays - (Big Bay - due to atroacious weather/no shows. Big Split - perfect weather & still a very large amount of no shows!.). At the moment I do not believe a simarily sized T25 display would succeed.

no big T25

Post by busman »

hi simon,

well, if there's no more space then it's impossible i guess. If there was i think all the other probles could be sorted out. And for myself i would be willing to give a hand at organising the big T25.
more people of this list and other T3 lists will like to help with the big T25
So if ever you think it can be organised let me know and i will try to get a completely inexperienced but well motivated team :-)

BIG Brick

Post by SYMCRO »

Thanks for your offer Mike,

I will put together a provisional (long term) plan.

Realistically (even if we were able to get the 800 plus vehicles) we are looking at at least 2 years away before even considering another display & this will depend on having the same area available, (free from other vehicles). It also depend on Vanfest crew resourses as well. The Big display organisation/build up has to be run as a separate entity during the show.
This (of course) also conflicts with present plans, which is to not do any more displays! & try and get this area for camping to relieve pressure on the rest of the showground.

It would be best from a promo & enthusiasm point of view to head for the next big T25 anniversary (30 years - 2009).
Maybe by then we will stand a better chance of getting the required numbers & committment to ensure the display is successful.

Next year it will be the tenth anniversary of the first Big VW display so the question is bound to come up again. (it is still no at the moment, .......but maybe for the future!)

the BIG brick

Post by busman »

hi simons,

even if it would be a long term plan you can count me in in helping organising it. No experience whatsoever but more then motivated.
2007, 2008 or 2009, it's all fine with me. With the vw logo, the T1 and the T2 done it's definitely an unfinished job not having had a big brick.
I do know vanfest is growing and growing. Space is already too little to do it for the moment, but it won't be getting better in the future i guess.
Well, don't want to push too much anymore. Just know that there will be always be people that want to help you in a BIG project like this.

on the big syncro picture i'm the orange one at the botom of the o :-)

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape; If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
