starting old engine

Post by leroy99 »

i am trying to start the 2.0ltr petrol twin carb that has been stood for about a year so that the tow truck can get to it. i tried yesterday with a little power pack, the engine turned over but not enough power in the power pack. i am going back with a proper van batt (fully charged), any other tips to start the engine would be appreciated eg priming etc..

Turning it over on the starter motor with the plugs out isn't a bad idea - splash the oil about a bit. Replace plugs, tip about a capful of petrol down both carbs (might have to do that more than once) and see if she'll fire. Often when they've been stood, pulling the fuel through can take ages so short bursts on a capful of fuel will help no end. Cap from an oil container is about right quantity.

absolutely. then tie a tow rope to it and drag it round in 2nd gear, it WILL go if all working parts are "working", and it saves you buying a new starter motor.
