Fog light switch

Post by Dubstar »

Just a quick question for you all-I'm putting the rear fog light in for the MOT on my 1981 Westy Joker, and I was going to put an original VW switch in, rather than an aftermarket one. There needs to be a warning light though to tell you when the fog lights on, so the question is, does the VW fog light switch light up or is it a light on the dash that lights up? Thanks :D
PS-I did mine by putting a bulb in the rear lights themselves, where there is a fog light hole and socket, just no wire or switch.Just had to spring load the bulb, and connect the wire. I did it with a small piece of spring and the wire out of an inline glass fuse holder and just drilled a small hole behind the bulb for it to go through. Looks better than hanging one of the bumper. In my opinion that is!

There's a light in the VW switch.

I tried the same thing last year, couldn't figure out the VW switch and ended up fitting one from Halfrauds with its own light.

I've tried 2 switches from Halfords, but both of them failed to light up, so I'm gonna have a go at wiring a VW one up, now that I know that it lights up. And Halfords can have their fog light and dodgy switch back! Cheers mate. :D

dont want to dampen your day, but has the rear light assy you have got a reflector in the fog lamp section? mine didnthave, and didnt emmitt enough light for the mot man.......... but all was well, as mine was rhd and i had made the dummy one on the other side work so i had two, so he lat it pass, as you only have to have one anyway, and it did work.

I think it has the reflectors. But I wired up both, and they are as bright as the brake lights, so hopefully it'll pas an MOT. As soon as I wire up an indicator light or get a VW fog light switch. I got one of those illuminated switches from Halfords and it didn't light up. After exchanging it for several others that didn't work I've given up and will get a VW one. It switches the back lights on but doesn't light up no matter which way round I wire it-3 pins, 1 earth,1 load, 1 power, using their instructions or any combination of the 3.

if it was LED type, if you wired it wrong it will be dead!
My MOT man had never look to see if my fog light switch illuminates.

however i firmly believe most cars should have a fog light indecator lamp as big as the actual fog lamp is on the rear in the center of the dash!

Definitely, although I'm sure the boyracers would turn them on anyway, and put some masking tape over the big red light on the dash!
As for the switch, I followed the instructions on the side-earth,load and power and it just didn't light up, so I tried every other way and it didn't work either,so a VW switch is the way forward I think. Or I'll just wire an LED into the circuit and put it in the other spare switch hole on the dash.
