leaking Automatic gear box

well, we went on our epic voyage to europe and got as far as germany before we hit a problem. The gear box started to leak ATF, I took it to a VW garage in fussen, the nice mechanic there replaced the gasket but said he needed another part which he didn't know the english word for and couldn't get hold of one for a week. He did a temp. patch but said it was important to get it fixed properly when I get back.
The flow has decreased substantially but there is still a bit of a drip.

It seems ok when the engine isn't running but the drip starts once you start changing gears, does anybody have any ideas what I need to ask my local garage to fix please?
I'm a bit clueless with gearboxes, my knowledge comes on a "need to know" basis :lol:

Difficult to say as it only leaks when there is any presure ie. I'm driving.
the drips seem to be around the bottom of the filler-upper / dipstick pipe, there is a round thing above this, could be there?
I think the gasket was leaking but that has been replaced so........where else can the juice get out?

"Sump" Gasket is the only place I've seen a leak... bit of a result him having one in stock btw... mine was 2 week special order job when I needed one!

From memory when i had problems with a Aircooled 2ltr devon that had a autobox ref leaking fluid.There was a big round part that had a large circlip.This would leak out fluid when it was running.I had other major problems with the autobox so i never got it repaired but replaced it with a second hand autobox.But i investigated the leak on the autobox that had been replaced.I removed the circlip on the big round think and a cylinder came out wth a strong spring .This part had round sealing rings that kept the fluid from leaking.I would advice you get a good gearbox repair garage or other to check out your leaks .I was unable to put that part back into the autobox without a special tool

if it is your sump leaking

when changing the gasket take apart the oil strainer at the bottom of the box to give it a clean as well

I think it was the sump gasket that I had replaced, the metal plate at the bottom of the gearbox? He didn't have the gasket in stock but being in germany he managed to get one in the next day.

this big round thing with the circlip sounds more like it, I presume there are o-rings? does anybody know the proper name of the parts I should be buying?

when i was working on my van ayear ago i did a light service on the box i rang up vw uk customer care who are very helpful and faxed me the complete service manual for the autobox

they said at the time that they have an interest in keeping their older models running as so would help as best they could

ok,

I found two diagrams

and it is agreed that the leak is cause by the o ring (item ten) in the first diagram, does anybody know what will happen when I pull the cir-clip out?
will something spring loaded pop out and make a pigs ear of everything?

If you take the circlip off the piston ie the round part will come out with a spring beneath it.There is two seals that seat into the piston.If you replace the seals you will need to device a way to compress the piston back.From memory i think there is a double spring behind that part and it looked tricky to get it back.Regarding obtaining seals and other repair parts for the auto box.Some time ago i discovered on the internet a company in America that supplies all the seals for the box.I left a message on this site with a link to it but i can not find it on here .I will have a search to see if i can find it again. http://replacement.autopartswarehouse.c ... _name=null. here's what was said

"We have found that the cover has rotted away and become perforated, and the ATF is leaking from there. In either case you would be looking at an approximate cost of £140.00 + vat to complete the work, if its the seal it will be cheaper as we will not have to spend time repairing the cover. "

anyone used these guys before?
