Oh crap!! Stripped a sump thread :(

Post by Mr Big »

1.6 N/A diesel btw... I was fitting a new rubber exhaust mount earlier. The only way I could get it on was by taking the oil filler tube off. I started undoing the bolts and one did not feel nice. I decided to leave it and tighten it back up. The bolt did a few turns and popped out...then the same happened again. I took the bolt our and two or three of the threads were full of metal. I replaced the bolt and it seemed to tighten ok. Only problem is its still leaking very slightly.

What do I do now? Try and tighten it up a bit more? Accept the fact its going to leak a bit and hope it doesnt pull itself out with the vibrations? Drill it out and helicoil it? I was hoping to have it MOT'd for Vanfest, but I guess that isnt going to happen now. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Tapping drill and tap to next size up, that clears the existing damaged might be another option, if the meat is there. Either imperial or metric.

Here's the club Wiki on tapping drills and and metric threads:
